Description
The Maxwell House brand of coffee was born in 1892, created by a grocer named Joel Owsley Cheek and named in honor of the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. The hotel stood until 1961, infamously known as the scene of the first national meeting of the Ku Klux Klan in 1867. The newly-incorporated General Foods Company bought the Maxwell House brand in the late 1920s and advertised it extensively in print and on the radio with stars such as George Burns and Gracie Allen and The Goldbergs. Soldiers were given instant Maxwell House Coffee during World War II and looked for the product when they returned home. This can probably dates from the 1980s or 1990s. Some corrosion on the bottom but overall in very good condition with no dents or serious scratches. This 3.25 "Special Trial Size" tin measures 2.5 x 3.25 inches (6.5 x 8.5 cm). The lid is plastic, not metal, but seals well, and the inside is very clean. Perfect as a container for that something special, luminary, office pen holder, part of a unique Maxwell House canister set (see other sizes we have), an element in the decor of a late twentieth-century kitchen, a planter, or some other re-purposed use.
